THEORISTS: PIAGET, VYGOTSKY, BRUNER
- Knowledge is constructed by the learner
- reality is a construct; no objective reality
- Children learn by 'assimilating' new ideas into existing structures (Piaget)
- Student-centred not 'chalk and talk'
- Students need to be actively engaged in the process; rote learning completely disregarded (Ausubel)
- Learning by doing in real-world contexts
- Social learning, dynamic structure and sense of journey/choice (see also Dialogic learning); teacher as facilitator
- Assessment is formative-centred and ongoing; less emphasis on standardisation
Further viewing; a nice overview...
vygotsky
- Learning precedes development (see Piaget vs Vygotsky)
- Importance of social interaction
- Tasks just Out of reach of our abilities: ZONE OF PROXIMAL DEVELOPMENT (see also 'Flow')
- Differentiation and scaffolding; each student has their own needs and learns differently
Vygotsky and piaget
Two useful videos to summarise some of the main arguments. In addition here is a link to a useful website that looks at these concepts from a psychological perspective...
